Thursday Thirteen

Thirteen Things That Conspire To Keep Me From Blogging

  1. Our internet provider — because of where we live, we don’t have many options for connecting to the internet. When we first moved up here, we connected via dial-up. Bummer! Our modem’s capabilities notwithstanding, our usual connection speed was 14kbps! After a temporary stay in town, we moved out to an acreage again, where we were dreading the lack of internet (because, honestly, what can you accomplish at that speed?)
We were surprised to find a note on our refrigerator, when we moved in. The woman who lived here previously left us the phone number for a company who delivered high-speed via radio. I’d never heard of that before, so we called immediately. That was the first thing we hooked up!
The owner’s biggest selling point was that we would NEVER have to worry about being able to connect to the internet. Nothing would cause us delays, because we were not reliant on phone lines. Wind storms, electrical storms and power outages wouldn’t affect us. There would not be a log jam at the busiest hours, because radio waves don’t get backed up. Sounds good, right?
Well, it turns out we are reliant on 900mhz. If anyone else is using that frequency, they CAN interfere with us. And guess who uses 900mhz? The oil and gas industry. So every day (according to our provider) the individual oil wells and gas thingies phone home. There are many, many oil and gas thingies where we live. There is a thriving industry up here. So guess who gets booted from the internet for long, odd intervals? So much for radio internet.
  2. CATS — they are incessant in their need to sit on the keyboard and demand my attention. As soon as I coax one down, another one is clawing at my leg. My cats are old. They can’t just jump up here; I have to lean over and gingerly lift them! But they won’t lay down quietly and purr for me, they want to make a nest, which requires constant circling, shifting of papers and kneading (sticking their CLAWS in me.)
  3. DOGS — They need attention too!
  4. Crying baby — My little man is having some difficulty getting used to it being light until 11pm and the accompanying heat. He’s had night terrors since he was born, so the changes make it worse.
  5. It’s light outside! Of course I would rather be outside!
  6. Competing for the computer. This is not as bad as it used to be, since Wubby usually does her blogging at work.
  7. House cleaning — it feels as if I can only do my cleaning after my little man is in bed for the evening.
  8. Reading — you can’t keep up with reading challenges if you are blogging!
  9. The camera — you can’t take pictures of the outdoors when you are facing the computer!
  10. Visitors — especially MIL, since she is the hardest working woman alive.
  11. Blogging software — I still have no idea why Windows Live Writer didn’t like my xthml.php (or something like that). And I have no idea why my actions “time out” or what that really means. I do know that it is frustrating to take the time to write and then not be able to post it in a timely manner.
  12. Keeping up with other bloggers updates (which I enjoy) and leaving comments.
  13. SLEEP!

  6. I feel your pain as well!!! And then when you do have time your just too exhausted to bother!

  7. Oh, I do know a little something about the pain of dial-up. I’ll say a little prayer for your internet woes, if you’ll say one for mine (LOL).

  8. I feel your pain..on a few points..mostly the internet connection..I have dial up..and probably always will as long as I live in this house. DSL stops 3 miles from where I live. grrrr. And the cats…It must be some odd genetic thing that makes them want to plop down on the keyboard while youre in mid-blog..mine do it too…and then proceed to fight about who is next …lol. Great blog..thanks for sharing πŸ˜€

  9. Yep, those things do it for me too. πŸ™‚ As you can see, the only time I have been blogging lately is when it is TT time! πŸ™‚

  10. Dogs, cats, reading… definitely the same over here!
Thanks for visiting my deity TT.

  11. I live out in the middle of nowhere, so my internet options are dial-up or hughesnet. I chose HughesNet and it is soooo not worth what I pay for it. Plus you have to buy the equipment, satellite dish etc. Anywho… most of the list applies to me except for the pets. I have none. Great idea for a list. Happy TT. Thanks for stopping by my blog.

  12. I have the cat problem too. Happy TT!

  13. Great list. I know how you feel about having time to blog. I do mine at night when my 3 1/2 year old is in bed. Happy TT and thanks for visiting mine.

  14. lol at #13, usually blogging, or just computing in general (games whatever) is keeping from sleep, not the other way around! I need to learn some prioritizing from you! πŸ˜‰

    Happy TT!

  15. Tell me about it! You need to see the photos I posted on Thursday – of my blogging problem!

  16. It only I didn’t have to sleep I could blog all night long. I do stay up way too late doing it though.

  17. Hi, like Brandon, I’m a developer on the Windows Live Writer team. By any chance do you have the Google XML Sitemaps plugin for WordPress installed? Older versions of that plugin are known to cause problems with clients like Windows Live Writer. If you have it installed, you might try deactivating it temporarily to see if it might be the culprit.
